The 5-Week NCLEX Study Plan
Five weeks is the sweet spot for NCLEX prep: long enough to cover every system, short enough to stay sharp. This free day-by-day plan pairs content review with daily practice questions — because questions teach clinical judgment, not just facts. Follow it with NCLEX Drill's free question bank and walk in ready.
Week 1 — Foundations & Test Strategy
Daily target: 50–75 questions/day
- Learn the NCLEX format: 85–150 questions, Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), 5-hour limit.
- Master prioritization frameworks: ABCs, Maslow, nursing process (ADPIE), acute vs. chronic, unexpected vs. expected.
- Review infection control & safety: standard precautions, isolation types, fall prevention.
- Take one 75-question baseline quiz to find your weak areas.
Week 2 — Med-Surg & Pharmacology (the heavy hitters)
Daily target: 75–100 questions/day
- Cardiac: heart failure, MI, dysrhythmias, hypertension meds (ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, diuretics).
- Respiratory: COPD, asthma, pneumonia, ABGs, oxygen therapy.
- Endocrine: diabetes (DKA vs. HHS), thyroid disorders, insulin types.
- High-yield pharm: digoxin toxicity, lithium levels, warfarin/INR, heparin/aPTT.
Week 3 — Maternal, Pediatric & Psych
Daily target: 75–100 questions/day
- Maternity: prenatal care, labor stages, postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, newborn assessment (APGAR).
- Peds: growth & development milestones, dehydration, immunizations, common emergencies.
- Psych: therapeutic communication, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar, substance abuse, eating disorders.
- Practice SATA (select-all-that-apply) heavily — they're the #1 score-killer.
Week 4 — Weak Areas + Timed Exams
Daily target: 100–125 questions/day
- Drill your weakest topics from weeks 1–3 (your quiz stats show exactly where).
- Take 2 full timed practice exams under real conditions — no phone, no breaks.
- Review every wrong answer's rationale until you can explain why the right answer is right.
- Lab values sprint: memorize critical values (K+ 3.5–5.0, Na+ 135–145, INR 2–3 on warfarin, etc.).
Week 5 — Taper & Confidence
Daily target: 50 questions/day, then rest
- Light review only — flashcards, mnemonics, your personal "gotcha" list.
- One final 85-question quiz 3 days before; review rationales, then stop.
- Day before: no studying. Sleep, hydrate, lay out your ID and confirmation.
- Exam day: trust your prep. Read every question twice, eliminate obviously wrong answers first.
Every question in this plan is free on NCLEX Drill.
5,000+ practice questions with full clinical rationales — no paywall.
